International Men's Day with Belfast Met & BroFlo Yoga for Guys
International Men’s Day in the UK falls on the 19th November every year, and is celebrated around the world in at least 60 countries, with the aim of making a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys.
A topic I’m super passionate about any day of the year, and so I was thrilled to be invited by Belfast Met, the largest further and Higher Education College in Northern Ireland, and one of the largest in the UK, to deliver an online session promoting physical and mental wellbeing, through my award-winning BroFlo Yoga for Guys programme.
I created BroFlo in 2017 with the ambition of introducing typically hesitant guys like me to the incredible benefits a regular yoga practice can bring. I named it BroFlo, as first and foremost, I hoped to help my four brothers use yoga, like I had, to thrive physically & perhaps more importantly, mentally.
“While most men are familiar with the importance of physical health and exercise, not all are aware of the important link between physical and mental health. Exercise is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health. A recent study in England found those who exercised reported fewer symptoms of depression than sedentary participants, and that an inactive adult who starts exercising three times a week, can cut his or her risk of depression by 19%.”

As a former Belfast Met student, and mental health ambassador for Aware NI, I was honoured to be a part of the programme of online events marking the day in this *ahem* challenging year.
Happy International Men’s Day!

– Dr Jonathan Heggarty, Director of Curriculum and Learner Success, Belfast Met
“Thanks so much to Gary for turning around a great session, and a fab overall programme – the guys who participated were truly delighted with it.”
